Housing: Worst of the worst?

The Hutchinson City Council appears poised to take a more aggressive stance on dilapidated housing in 2014.  It is expected to add $100,000 to the budget for demolishing vacant, abandoned and unsafe houses.

The city is expected to begin working from a list of 500 of the “worst of the worst” houses provided by the Reno County Appraiser’s office. City staff is now “field checking” each of those addresses.

The Fire Department and Police Department are expected to contribute additional houses that are either considered fire hazards or vacant homes that have become sites of criminal activity.

The pictures accompanying this post come the appraiser’s list of 500 homes provided to the Housing Commission.

  1. I will admit there are some pretty bad houses in this town. I live on Sherman and there is a house two blocks away that looks condemnable, I don’t know how the family that lives there can stand it. However not all houses on Sherman are that bad. I didn’t see a mention of any Sherman homes in the paper, but I know Sherman has a reputation. I was very weary about looking at homes 3 years ago on this street, but I was surprised to find out that there are more nice homes on this street than people realize.
