Eight houses, one large garage on new city demolition list

Here’s wondering whether Trent Maxwell has Queen’s song “Another One Bites the Dust” on his iPod.

Maxwell, Hutchinson’s building official, will ask the City Council on Tuesday to schedule a public hearing for Sept. 17 on condemnation of eight more vacant and dilapidated houses and one large collapsing carriage house behind another home. On this year’s list are: 207 E. Avenue G, 209 E. Avenue G, 307 E. Avenue E, the carriage house behind 701 E. Sherman, 1308 E. Fifth Ave., 3011 E. Fourth Ave., 16 W. Sixth Ave. 15 W. Eighth Ave and 321 E. Second Ave.

At condemnation hearings In the past, the Council has given owners of property subject to condemnation 30 days to either bring their property up to code of submit a satisfactory plan for doing so in a relatively prompt time frame or their houses will be condemned and demolished.

Since 2011, the city has condemned and torn down 12 dilapidated houses as part of a stepped up campaign to rid the city of some of its worst eyesores.  Two other houses were demolished by their owners after being condemned. Three commercial buildings also have been torn down.

Those totals don’t include emergency demolitions after fires that left houses unsafe and beyond repair.

I can hear the refrain now.

Below is a gallery of photos of the houses on this year’s demo list.

I think I can hear the refrain.

Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, I’m gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust

    • Can’t say as I’m a huge Queen fan. But those lyrics just popped in my head as I was looking at these pictures. It’s one of those songs that’s sort of become an anthem.
