Bruce Vaughan is back on the golf course for the first time since February.
The Hutchinson resident is playing in this weekend’s PGA Champions Tour stop in Savannah, Ga. Play begins on Friday, but on Thursday he played a practice round and took part in the pro-am festivities, standard fare for a pro golfer.
“I’m doing OK,” said the 2008 Senior British Open winner. “I am having some real caddie issues, though.”
He was joking, of course.
Vaughan hand-picks his caddies for each tournament. Carrying his bag this week is Hutchinson Community College basketball coach John Ontjes, an avid golfer and good friend to Vaughan.
You get the feeling Ontjes, who played point guard at Oklahoma before eventually landing at HCC, is up for the challenge.
Vaughan was a regular at the Hutchinson Sports Arena this winter, as Ontjes’ Blue Dragons were making their second straight run to the NJCAA final four.
