For Kansas history buffs, or for anyone who enjoys reading about how things used to be, it’s worth the time to read the three-part series “When Government Worked for Kansas,” by former Harris reporter and Lindsborg Record owner John Marshall.
The series can be found on the Kansas Health Institute’s website. It’s a long series, but it recounts some of the best times in Kansas past, as well as the dedication and resolve of the state’s leaders who worked to make the state a better place to live.
I think sometimes it is easy to forget that things haven’t always been as we’ve known them. Someone built all these roads, put in the water and sewer lines, built public lakes and spent money to eradicate diseases. Marshall’s piece did a good job of reminding me of this history.
