John Crooms Headstone Dedication

Crooms Headstone

On Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, I had the opportunity to attend and cover the dedication ceremony  for a headstone placed at the previously unmarked grave of John Crooms in Hutchinson’s Eastside Cemetery. Crooms, who escaped slavery to fight for the Union forces in the Civil War, served with the Fifth U.S. Colored Cavalry, Company C. The ceremony was made possible by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War who were contacted by Janice Lovelace, the great granddaughter of John Crooms. She traveled from Seattle for the event.
